Thinking about joining Facebook? Whether it’s to stay connected with family, catch up with old friends, or just be part of the social scene, setting up a account is quick and easy. Here’s exactly how to create an account from scratch.
Sign-Up Page
First, open your browser and go to www.facebook.com. You’ll see the sign-up form right there on the homepage.
Enter Your Personal Information
Here’s what needs to get you started:
- Your First and Last Name: Use your real name so friends can find you easily.
- Mobile Number or Email: Choose one that’s current and accessible. This will be your login info and help you recover your account if needed.
- Password: Pick something secure, with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Make sure it’s easy to remember but hard for others to guess!
- Birthday: Facebook asks for your birth date to confirm your age (you need to be at least 13 to sign up).
- Gender: Select one of the provided options or choose to keep it private if you’d like.
Once you’ve filled everything out, click the green Sign Up button.
Confirm Your Email or Phone Number
After signing up, It will send you a confirmation code to the email or phone number you provided. Here’s what to do:
- Email: Check your inbox (or spam folder just in case), find the email from Facebook, and click on the link to verify your account.
- Phone: Facebook will send a text message with a code. Enter the code in the space provided to verify your phone number.
Add Profile Details and Photo
After confirming, you’ll be prompted to fill in some profile details:
- Profile Picture: Adding a profile picture is optional but a good idea, as it helps friends recognize you. Choose a picture from your device or take a new one.
- Cover Photo: This optional banner image appears at the top of your profile. You can add a landscape photo, favorite quote, or anything that reflects you.
Find Friends and Connect
Now that you have an account, it will suggest some ways to find people you may know. You can:
- Search for Friends by Name: Use the search bar at the top of the page to look up friends by name.
- Sync Your Contacts: It can sync with your phone or email contacts to find people you may know.
- Accept Friend Suggestions: It will suggest people based on mutual friends and shared networks.
Explore Your News Feed and Profile
Your homepage will show your News Feed, where you can see posts from friends, pages you follow, and groups you’ve joined. You can post updates, share photos, and react to friends’ posts directly from here.
Your profile page is like your personal space on it. This is where you can add information about yourself, like your hometown, work, school, interests, or anything else you’d like to share. You can access it anytime by clicking on your name in the top right.
Set Privacy Settings
Privacy is important! Before you start posting, take a minute to adjust your privacy settings. Here’s how:
- Click on the downward arrow in the top right corner, select Settings & Privacy > Privacy Checkup.
- From here, you can control who can see your posts, who can send you friend requests, and more. It’s a good way to ensure your account is as private (or public) as you’d like it to be.
Congratulations – you’re now officially on it! Whether you’re using it to keep in touch with friends and family, join groups, or follow interests, there’s a lot you can do.
